Letter from the Chair

by John G. Jessen, AIA, NCARB, IIDA

Welcome to the Interior Architecture Knowledge Community's summer 2008 newsletter. The focus of this edition is education, including discussions of the "traditional" architectural curriculum, new degree programs with an interior architecture specialization, Intern Development Program (IDP), web-based tools, professional continuing education opportunities, and learning from each other as peers. This issue presents multiple perspectives, offers lessons learned, captures forecasts and provides information to help optimize your practice.

Featured in this newsletter are articles by Margo Jones, FIIDA, IDEC, LEED AP, and Annie Chu, AIA, NCARB. "A Win-Win Scenario: Interns in Office Practice," by Margo Jones, is a discussion of the evolving role of interns in architectural and interior design firms as they begin to play a larger role in the design of project-related work and provide expertise in the field of building information modeling (BIM), sustainability, and other developments which are being prominently featured in institutions of higher education. "What of mobile emergency relief centers, truck stops and courthouses?", by Annie Chu, tells the story of the 1:2 Student Design Charrette, a one-day student scholarship program competition with a $23,000 purse shared amongst the top three tier teams.

I would like to thank our previous chair, Richard Logan, for his tremendous leadership in the position over the past year. I'm excited to take on Richard's responsibilities of chair for this group, particularly when I reflect on the collective knowledge and experience this team possesses. Our membership currently stands at nearly 5,000 members, a testament to the successes achieved over the past several years. I'd like to take a moment to recognize the current members of the Interior Knowledge Community and past chairs:

Our speaking tour has been incredibly active this year, presenting throughout the country, and we will continue to speak at events through the rest of the year. The topics include:
• Design as a Business Strategy
• How to Work with an Interior Designer
• Grow Your Practice: the Interior Advantage
• FF&E for Dummies
• Codes for Interior Architects

In the spring we saw the release of our book Significant Interiors, the culmination of four years of extensive work and collaboration among the members of our Advisory Group. The book features a select few AIA Honor Award-winning projects from 2000 to 2005, emphasizing the unique attributes that makes each project an award winner. It also identifies through these special projects the overall emerging trends in interior architecture during the first half of this decade. In each newsletter, we will focus on one project from Significant Interiors. For this edition, we have selected "Beauty in Form and Material", on the interior design of the new offices for XAP Corporation by the firm Pugh + Scarpa Architecture. This project provides an example of achieving design excellence within the tightest of parameters, using a collaborative technique that allowed for rapid decision-making; a solid example for our students to study.

As we move towards autumn, we'd like to extend a reminder that the AIA National Institute Awards are coming up on August 29th. Please get your submissions in so we can feature your project in the next edition of Significant Interiors.

While this newsletter features education, the next newsletter will focus on what you do with it: design. Please submit your articles discussing the value of design to Steven McCollom at smccollom@garyleepartners.com by October 15, 2008.

Please email interiors@aia.org if you have any additional questions, comments, or would like to become more involved in the Interior Architecture Advisory Group. We are seeking architects for a number of committee positions including Research, Outreach, Programs, and Sponsorship.

Sincerely,
John Jessen, AIA, IIDA, NCARB - 2008 Chair
