The Center for Communities by Design is a catalyst, convener,
and source of information that helps AIA members work with citizens
and other stakeholders to envision and create more livable
communities.
The Center believes that architects are critical to designing safe,
attractive, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable
communities.
Good design is an investment; well-designed communities will
attract and benefit residents, businesses, and visitors, and meet
the needs of present and future generations alike.
Programs
Communities by Design promotes the AIA's livability goals in three
principal ways:
1. The Center shares information, advises on policy development,
and provides resources to architects involved in
improving communities.
2. The Center supervises the Design Assistance Team (DAT) program. This
includes the Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team
(R/UDAT) program, which has
been helping communities respond to change
and envision their future for over 35 years, and the new Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT)
program.
3. The Center coordinates the AIA's Disaster Assistance program, which
provides support to architects in helping assess damage and rebuild
communities hit by disasters.
Other activities
include:
* Spotlighting members' efforts to create more livable
communities. The Center works most closely with the following AIA
Knowledge Communities: Committee on the Environment, Regional and Urban Design Committee, Housing & Residential Architecture,
and Historic Preservation.
* Partnering with other organizations to
share information on livable communities.
* Contributing to AIA Government Advocacy's work related to
livable communities, including sustainable design, brownfields
redevelopment, and other federal initiatives.
